UC Systemwide Faculty AI Survey
From April 29 to May 23, 2025, UCOP partnered with Tritonlytics to conduct the inaugural UC Systemwide Faculty AI Survey, a first-of-its-kind effort to understand how artificial intelligence is shaping teaching, research, and campus life across the UC system.
Background
The confidential survey was organized into three main sections: Academic and Research Usage, Teaching Usage, and Administrative/Institutional Perspectives, with an additional demographic block to enable subgroup analysis. This design provides a comprehensive understanding of how faculty currently engage with AI tools, their concerns, and their perspectives on future adoption.
Goals:
-
Assess the current level of AI adoption and awareness among faculty.
-
Determine the types of AI training and support that would be most beneficial to faculty across various disciplines.
-
Gather faculty perspectives on the future applications of AI in their respective fields.
-
Understand faculty expectations regarding AI literacy for students.
-
Explore faculty perspectives on critical issues such as originality, intellectual property, and responsible AI use.
-
Analyze how responses differ across disciplines to identify specific needs and opportunities.
Highlights
- Inclusive by design: A census-based approach invited all UC faculty to participate – ensuring every voice had the opportunity to be represented, rather than limiting input through selective sampling.
- Ladder-rank and equivalent/Senate Faculty
- Lecturers, Instructors, Adjunct Faculty
- Post Doctoral Research Fellows
- Clinical Faculty
- PhD Students (Graduate Teaching or Graduate Research Assistants)
- National Labs (Lawrence Lab only)
- Visiting Scholars, Professors, Fellows, etc.
- Statistically robust: 6,364 responded to the survey, yielding a ±3% margin of error, well within accepted reliability standards.
- Exploratory (not predictive): Designed to establish a baseline understanding of faculty perspectives on AI across the UC system – to inform future strategy and next-phase research.
UC San Diego Results
UCSD achieved a total of 796 survey responses. View the results infographic (PDF).
